Sleep Quality Among the Unhoused

Sleep Quality Among the Unhoused

Christine Platt, PhD | Sleep Quality Among the Unhoused

The Problem

  • Unhoused people do not have access to quality sleep
  • Poor sleep contributes to poor physical and mental health outcomes
  • Policy and shelter availability limit safe sleep options

Why It Matters

  • Good sleep contributes to better quality of life!
    • Ability to make informed decisions
    • More likely to hold on to positive relationships
    • Greater capacity to achieve goals

What Works

  • Access to legal sleep (shelters, encampments, warming centers)
  • Community engagement - support from community members to change policy, city council member support, getting rid of stigma, etc.

What Now

  • De-stigmatize and de-criminalize homelessness
  • Increase awareness
  • Provide legal sleep options in communities lacking shelters
